Windows by Ada Currey - Artist

Ada Currey (1852-1913) made her first known design for stained glass in 1888, which was made by J Powell and Sons. Her father was William Currey of Weybridge, Surrey who was legal adviser to the Duke of Devonshire and the brother of Henry Currey who inter alia also worked extensively for the Duke as an architect. Initially, Ada was treated as an amateur, though she exhibited paintings, but within a few years Powell's were paying her for designs for glass, paintings and mosaics and she became a paid employee of the firm from 1890 to 1901. After her employment by Powell's ended, she continued to design glass on her own account, which was largely made by them, until her death. She never married and is recalled as deeply religious.
