John James Kayll was born in Sunderland in 1851, his family originally coming from the Isle of Man. His father (also John James) was a partner in Hartleys glassworks in Sunderland, and was also Mayor of Sunderland at one time. John James (junior) ran Kayll & Co of Leeds after moving to that area. Later traded as Kayll and Reed.
