Stewart Bowman, 1936-2019.
Born at Risca in Wales, Stewart's family moved to Haddenham in Bucks when he was two years old. He developed a passion for drawing from an early age and aged 13 won a poster competition run by the National Garden Show. Aged 15 he began a 7 year apprenticeship with Michael Farrar Bell at Haddenham and achieved the status of Master Glass Painter. Aged 18 he won a stained glass competition, and in 1958 a scholarship & Diploma of Merit from the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass. He worked with Michael Farrar Bell for 20 years and one of their collaborations was Elizabeth II's coat of Arms in St Mary's, Haddenham. It has Stewart's 'bow-man' symbol in the corner. He ran his own company, Stewart Bowman's Stained Glass, and was involved locally with windows in Our Lady of Light in Long Crendon and St Mary's, Oakley, also further afield in Britain and abroad. His son Stephen had his own company, Bowman's Stained Glass and in 2000 they installed Millennium widows in All Saints, Brill and St Peter's Great Haseley. In the same year Stewart made windows for St Joseph's in Thame and Stoke Mandeville Hospital. (Bucks Herald, 27 February, 2019).
